False Vitality
How Stimulation Can Mimic Vitality Without Improving Recovery
When Stimulation Feels Like Vitality
In Long-Arc Recovery, the expected trajectory of recovery was presented. What now needs to be clarified is how common products and practices that are often touted as being supportive and beneficial, can actually be detrimental to recovery.
Stimulants are a fitting class of products to focus on for this examination. The use of stimulants in modern life is widespread. Currently, in most places in the world, a majority of adults use caffeine regularly. The explosion of stimulant products is a reflection of the busy pace of modern life, but the justification for their use is often that they give you energy to get through the day, not that they help bodily restoration.
Why Natural Doesn't Always Mean Healthy
Most of the caffeine people consume is from coffee and tea. People have been drinking these for many generations, and today they are often treated as an expected part of life. While products like energy drinks and sodas are more clearly recognized as unhealthy, coffee and tea often get a pass. It is true that energy drinks and sodas are likely more harmful, but that has more to do with dosage and the other ingredients in them. The caffeine itself affects the body through the same mechanisms whether it comes from a natural source or is consumed in an isolated form.
Caffeine Distorts Bodily Signaling
When caffeine is ingested, it suppresses the signal in the body that alerts you when to rest and slow down. Normally, adenosine builds up in the body the longer you are awake. The more it accumulates, the stronger the signal becomes for you to wind down and rest. When you take caffeine, it blocks the adenosine receptors in the body so this slowdown signal cannot be properly received. This is what gives you the feeling of having energy. It is not a sudden burst of untapped vitality; it is a distortion of bodily signaling that creates this felt experience.
Once the caffeine wears off and the adenosine receptors stop being blocked, the accumulated adenosine is now finally felt. This is when the crash is often felt. The body went from not detecting much adenosine to detecting it fully again. This internal interaction is detrimental to the stability of normal bodily rhythms.
Why Stimulants Hinder Recovery
People with chronic illnesses generally have whole-body systems that are misaligned, including the autonomic nervous system, endocrine system, immune system, gastrointestinal system and others. When whole bodily systems are not operating efficiently, the signaling and coordination between them and the rest of the body isn't being properly harmonized.
Adding stimulants to a body that is already struggling to maintain stable regulation will further distort signaling and communication. This may exacerbate the issues you already have and prevent the body from establishing the proper regulatory orientation that is necessary for long-arc recovery.
Stimulatory Practices That Prevent Settling
Stimulants don't just come in the form of something external you can ingest. Stimulatory effects can also be triggered in the body as a result of forced autonomic activation practices. These include activating forms of breathwork, kundalini practices, trance-producing drumming, and cathartic trauma-release techniques.
These practices put additional demand on the body that it must respond to accordingly. The response is activation, which may include elevated heart rate, raised blood pressure, a decrease in parasympathetic tone, and an increase in sympathetic neural activity. This activity increases overall signaling in the body, which is why the person may subjectively feel a sensation of buzzing, tingling, pressure, heat, and vibration while also potentially experiencing increased alertness, waves of emotion, or even euphoria. All of these interrupt settling and weaken signaling toward deep parasympathetic repair.
Energy Being Spent Can Feel Like Vitality
When you feel energy from ingesting stimulants or engaging in stimulatory practices, it may seem like you are helping the body create more energy, but in reality you are forcing it to spend more energy. A better way to approach this is to give your body the appropriate conditions to thrive. If you provide it with healthy air, sunlight, enough relaxation and downtime, a proper diet, and restorative sleep, this will allow it to take advantage of those supportive conditions and do the healing work that you don't need to think about.
What Comes Next
Recognizing false vitality changes what you pay attention to when evaluating whether something is actually helping. The next question that follows from this is: in a modern health landscape full of convincing options, compelling claims, and noticeable short-term effects, how do you navigate toward what actually supports long-term recovery? That's what the next article addresses.
